Academic Dean

The Panamerican Agricultural School-Zamorano is conducting a search for the position of Academic Dean of the University. The selected candidate will assume his/her responsibilities in early 2012. Founded in 1942, Zamorano is a private, non-profit international university specializing in the areas of agricultural production, sustainable management of natural resources and the environment, rural development to reduce poverty, and improvement of global agribusiness competitiveness. Zamorano graduates work in agricultural production, agribusiness, food technology, conservation, government jobs, and academia. The institution is located in the Yeguare valley in the Francisco Morazán Department of Honduras and is registered in the United States as a non-profit corporation. In Honduras the institution has the status of an International Mission and is recognized by the Honduran Council of Higher Education. Currently, Zamorano is undergoing an accreditation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Zamorano offers four undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Engineering: Agricultural Science and Production, Agribusiness Management, Food Agroindustry, and Socioeconomic Development and Environment. The educational program emphasizes academic excellence and character formation, and it complements theory with practical field experience through its Learning by Doing program, which makes up half of the Zamorano formation.

The University boasts an enrollment of 1156 students from 22 Latin American countries. Zamorano is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of 18 members from 9 countries, including leaders in business, education and civic affairs. The institution is especially interested in reaching out to it alumni for support.

The campus is approximately 19 miles from Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, and lies on 14,000 acres. All students and about 100 professors, instructors, personnel members and their families live on the campus. In Zamorano’s multicultural and bilingual environment, all members of the community share a commitment to Panamericanism.

Requirements for the successful candidate:
• A Ph.D. or its equivalent in an agriculture-related field.
• Fifteen (15) years of proven experience in activities related to education, academic research or administration; planning and management of socioeconomic development programs; or management of businesses in the agrifood sector.
• Ability to join and participate in an international community; knowledge and understanding of Latin American culture; and extensive multicultural experience.
• Ability to effectively establish interpersonal relations with young people, a multicultural and multinational teaching staff, and to promote teamwork, working toward a common goal.
• Commitment to the integral formation of young people from the Latin American region.
• Administrative skills; ability to work in teams; and an understanding of higher education financial affairs.
• Ability to lead Zamorano’s faculty and to maintain excellent interpersonal and organizational relationships.
• Understanding of Zamorano’s heritage and a firm commitment to its philosophy and objectives.
• Leading a value-based lifestyle.
• Ability to work independently in a goal-oriented and motivated manner.
• Mastery of both Spanish and English, with experience working in a multicultural environment, preferably in Central or South America for at least 5 years.
• Efficient in the use of Microsoft Office and the Internet.
• Willingness to live on the Zamorano campus in a rural area 30 km from Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.
• An exclusive full-time commitment to Zamorano.
• Commitment and the ability to embrace Zamorano’s mission, vision and values.

The salary is competitive, according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. In addition to the benefits required by Honduran law, the successful candidate will receive an annual trip to his/her country of residence and a house on campus.
