Covenant House Pennsylvania located in Philadelphia, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Development Director. The Development Director coordinates efforts to increase the Agency’s funding base. The main objective is to adhere to a strategic plan to procure funds for Covenant House Pennsylvania through fundraising, cultivating donors, and building relationships, while promoting its mission and programs. Covenant House began over 30 years ago in the lower east side of Manhattan and now has programs in 21 U.S. cities and Latin America. Covenant House Pennsylvania (CHPA) was established in Philadelphia in 1999. Services began with a Community Outreach Center that worked predominately with street youth. What started as a place where young people were offered a meal, a place to do laundry and get referrals for more complex needs such as housing and medical care has grown to a diverse agency that provides a full continuum of services to meet the complex needs of homeless and runaway youth. These include Street Outreach, a 51-bed Crisis Center, and the newly opened facility housing the transitional living program of Rights of Passage (ROP).

 

Covenant House Pennsylvania serves homeless, runaway and at-risk youth with absolute respect and unconditional love.  Providing a continuum of services for youth in need, CHPA is the largest private child welfare agency in the Delaware Valley. Last year alone CHPA served over 5,300 young people through its residential, community and outreach services. As part of the international Covenant House organization, CHPA is guided by the principles of Immediacy, Sanctuary, Values Communication, Structure and Choice.

Principal Responsibilities for the Development Director: 

  1. Lead and manage the Agency’s overall Development efforts to meet established budgetary goals.
  2. Work closely with the Executive Director and Finance Director to develop financial goals for the department.
  3. Work with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop and implement a multifaceted resource development strategic plan that complements the national direct marketing program and includes diverse elements and approaches to generating support for CHPA.
  4. Create and administer fundraising programs and events to build and create key relationships to expand funding base. 
  5. Spend significant time cultivating relationships with donors and potential donors.
  6. Identify, build and steward relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations and community organizations as an integral part of volunteer and donor prospect development and participation in Agency activities.
  7. Manage Development staff, including hiring, supervising, evaluating performance, identifying training opportunities, and developing strategies to achieve the financial goals. This position supervises the Special Events Manager, the Communications Manager and the Grant Writer.
  8. Work with Covenant House Corporate to maximize the effectiveness of the direct marketing and to identify and cultivate planned giving opportunities.
  9. Provide staff support to the Board of Directors Resource Development Committee.  Through the Executive Director, work with the Board of Directors to facilitate their effectiveness as fund-raisers.

Qualifications:

The candidate must have: a Bachelor’s Degree (CFRE or Master’s preferred) and 5-7 years of proven successful fundraising and administrative experience ideally in a non-profit agency of comparable size and mission; experience in government, corporate, foundation and major donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; knowledge of prospective donors in the Philadelphia area, a thorough understanding of resource development operations, principles and ethics; the ability to collaborate well with others; and to promote and articulate the mission of CHPA. Being at ease communicating with teenagers is highly desirable. S/He must have demonstrated written, verbal, organizational, management, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines. Computer literacy and technical competence with databases, spreadsheets, and internet research with a proficiency in Windows environment in a must.

                                                             

The new Director will be given the opportunity to assist the Executive Director and the Board in building a comprehensive development program necessary to take the level of fundraising at Covenant House Pennsylvania to new heights.
