for the position of

Superintendent of Catholic Education

The Archdiocese of St. Louis (www.archstl.org) is the Roman Catholic archdiocese that covers the City of St. Louis and the Missouri counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Perry, Saint Charles, Saint Francois, Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Warren, and Washington. The Archdiocese of St. Louis is currently led by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, the former Bishop of Saginaw. Archbishop Carlson is assisted by Auxiliary Bishop Edward M. Rice and Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Robert Joseph Hermann. The archdiocesan cathedral is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

The Superintendent of Catholic Education is appointed by the Archbishop as the chief educational leader in the archdiocese and is his representative in the administration of educational programs for pre-school children through adults, including the Catholic elementary and secondary schools, the parish schools of religion, parish programs for adults, and serving children with special needs. The Superintendent reports directly to the Archbishop.

 

Responsibilities of the Superintendent:

  • Serve as the delegate of the Archbishop in advancing the Church’s educational mission, articulating the philosophy of total Catholic education and shaping the vision for education in the Archdiocese
  • Oversee the development and implementation of programs to enhance the Catholic schools as agents of the New Evangelization and to provide spiritual formation for Catholic educators
  • Serve as administrator of the Archdiocesan High Schools, the Catholic Education Center, Parish Educational Programs, and Special Education Programs
  • Provide for the effective planning, marketing and communications for the Archdiocese, including internal and external audiences
  • Provide leadership to the Archdiocesan Board of Catholic Education and other Archdiocesan organizations
  • Oversee the administration of archdiocesan education endowments and grants.
  • Serve as the spokesperson for Catholic education to the civic, political, business, and educational communities
  • Serve on the Board of the Today and Tomorrow Foundation, advocate for Catholic schools, and solicit funds from the business community for Catholic schools.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis is seeking an experienced professional who is knowledgeable about Catholic education and has a strong background and demonstrated successful experience in administration.  The ideal candidate must be a practicing Catholic and should have the credentials appropriate for a superintendent of education (minimum of a master’s degree); five to seven years of relevant experience that includes increasing responsibility, preferably in Catholic education; demonstrated success in a leadership role; a comprehensive understanding of the educational market; experience in strategic planning; and the skills necessary for building important relationships for growth of Catholic schools and religious educational programs. The new Superintendent must have impeccable integrity, exemplary oral and written communication skills, a record of proven leadership ability and vision, and the commitment to the mission, vision and values of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
