Maria College is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Nursing.  The Chair of Nursing oversees the directors of the LPN Program, the Associate Degree Program, the RN-BS completion program, the proposed accelerated BS in Nursing, and will be charged with overseeing the development of the BSN program

Founded in 1959 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, Maria College of Albany is a private, coeducational, Catholic college that serves approximately 1000 students in a variety of degree and certificate programs.  Known for its warm, caring culture, its personalized attention to students, flexible scheduling and highly affordable tuition, the College has entered an exciting period of growth as it transitions from a two-year college to a four-year institution.  Maria College began in the areas of early childhood education, liberal arts and business, and has since built a regional reputation for excellence in the health sciences, including nursing and occupational therapy.  Plans call for further expansion in the areas of business, liberal arts and the humanities. 

Responsibilities and Functions of Nursing Chair:

  • Uphold and Promote the Mission and Philosophy of the College
  • Supervise Faculty
    • Evaluate and recommend for faculty for reappointment, promotion
    • Recruit and recommend prospective faculty in cooperation with VPAA
    • Appoint faculty to committees
    • Provide orientation to new faculty
    • Plan overall teaching schedule for department and assign faculty to courses in collaboration with program directors for submission to the VPAA/Dean
    • Maintain record of current RN licensure and malpractice insurance for all faculty
  • Manage Curriculum
    • Initiate and implement curricular changes in collaboration with program directors
    • Oversee the development of the new BSN program
    • Develop courses in collaboration with department faculty and program directors
    • Review and evaluate courses and programs in terms of objectives, content, prerequisites, instructional method, and credit
  • Administer the Department
    • Maintain department records
    • Oversee the revision of the departmental section of catalogs and handbooks
    • Prepare departmental budget and submit to administration for approval
  • Maintain and Develop Relationships with Local, State and National Agencies
    • Represent Maria College nursing faculty at community/state council meetings
    • Be involved in organizations that relate to nursing and/or community health needs
    • Maintain a positive working relationship with the NY State Education Department
  • Maintain Relationships with All College Programs and Administrative Offices
    • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with Admissions Office, Registrar’s Office, and other student support services
    • Attend Chair Committee meetings
  • Provide Academic Leadership for Faculty and Staff in the Nursing Department
    • Responsible for departmental implementation of academic policies and regulations
    • Ensure academic integrity and professional standards within department
    • Collect and review objectives, syllabi and assignments for all nursing courses
    • Conduct monthly department meetings for discussion and input of the faculty on curricular, instructional and/or operational matters that apply to the department
    • Initiate program studies to encourage scholarly research and/or creative projects within the Department
  • Create an Atmosphere Conducive for Student Learning
    • Coordinate procedures for the recruitment, admission, retention, advising, supervision, graduation, and placement of students who are Department majors
    • Maintain academic files on students majoring in the Department
    • In consultation with Department faculty members, make recommendations for student honors and awards
    • Attempt to resolve conflicts involving Department faculty and/or students 
    • Ensure quality of student advisement within department
    • Monitor graduates’ performances on licensure examinations and post-graduation employment, when applicable, under the requirements for accreditation
  • Promote Accountability at State, League and College Levels
    • Prepare annual reports, self-studies, and accreditation reports for submission to the Vice President for Academic Affairs
  • Establish and Supervise Clinical Learning Sites
  • Teach one nursing course per semester

The ideal candidate must have a PhD, EdD, or DNP with a minimum of a Master’s in Nursing.  Previous clinical and academic administrative experience required.  The candidate must hold (or acquire) a current RN license for the State of New York.
