Saint Mary’s College (www.SaintMarys.edu) seeks nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Faculty.  Saint Mary’s is a Catholic, residential, women’s college in the liberal arts tradition. Position:  Reporting to the Provost / Senior VP for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Faculty is responsible for oversight and support of the undergraduate programs of the College, all academic departments and interdisciplinary programs of the College, and the Center for Academic Innovation.  This full-time, 12 month position provides supervision of the Director of the Writing Program and the Director of the Writing Center and serves on the Provost’s Academic Administrators Council.

 

The new Dean of the Faculty will:

  • lead the College faculty in continual review and improvement of the undergraduate academic program;
  • promote quality instruction of the undergraduate academic program;
  • recommend to the President and the Provost/ Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs the hiring, retention, or non-retention of pre-tenure faculty;
  • annually review each academic department or interdisciplinary program;
  • conduct monthly Council of Chairs meetings and annual retreats;
  • manage and review all budgets of the undergraduate programs;
  • serve as a voting ex officio member of relevant Councils and Committees or appoints a designee to do so;
  • represent the College in designated professional associations and functions as requested;
  • provide oversight and support to the academic departments interdisciplinary programs and committees reporting to the Dean of Faculty;
  • serve as a voting ex officio member of the Academic Affairs Council, the Committee on Rank and Tenure and the President’s Council on Multicultural Affairs;

Qualifications:  The selected candidate will have a terminal degree in an academic area offered by the College; three to five years of related experience in higher education administration; qualifications for the rank of full professor; an exemplary record of teaching and scholarship; excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal with conflict and resolve disputes.  S/He must have experience with academic budgets, knowledge and experience with assessment; and an understanding of and strong support of the mission of the College.
