Dean of Arts and Sciences

The University of Bridgeport (www.Bridgeport.edu) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. As the chief academic officer for the School of Arts and Sciences, the Dean reports directly to the Provost. In conjunction with the School of Arts and Sciences faculty, staff and senior university administration, the Dean is responsible for the effective delivery of educational programs, consistent with the mission of the University of Bridgeport and the School of Arts and Sciences.

The School of Arts and Sciences offers a range of traditional undergraduate programs, the largest of which are Psychology, Biology, Human Services and Health Sciences. In addition, the School serves a large group of students in its General Studies Program and its First Year Studies Program (for underprepared students needing additional academic support), as well as for undecided majors.  New programs have recently been added in Health Sciences and Medical Laboratory Sciences. The School is responsible for teaching most of the University's core curriculum, and thus in addition to its nearly 1000 student majors, offers instruction to all of the University's undergraduates. The School offers an MS degree in Counseling enrolling currently approximately 120 students.

 

MAJOR DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES for the Dean of Arts and Sciences:

  • Supervising a faculty and staff of over thirty individuals.
  • Revising / updating a strategic plan for the School of Arts and Sciences undergraduate and graduate curricula.
  • Preparing a proposed operating budget for the School of Arts and Sciences and monitoring all financial transactions relative to the School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Recommending to the Provost hiring, reappointment, rank, promotion and tenure of School faculty and advising the Provost on termination recommendations of faculty.
  • Representing the School of Arts and Sciences on the Provost's Council and other appropriate University committees and insuring the full integration of the School of Arts and Sciences within the University of Bridgeport.
  • Approving and assisting in developing all public relations and marketing materials relative to the School of Arts and Sciences as well as cooperating with the Dean of Admissions to establish and achieve enrollment goals.
  • Providing leadership for the School of Arts and Sciences for fund-raising and grant writing in conjunction with the University Relations Group, the Office of Sponsored Research and the Institutional Grants Office, and representing the School of Arts and Sciences at professional, public relations and fund raising events.
  • Publishing (or continued creative accomplishments) in candidate's discipline and encouraging the School of Arts and Sciences faculty to publish (or continue creative accomplishments) in University, regional or professional publications and forums as is appropriate to their discipline.
  • Supervising and supporting the Academic Division and academic support services offered within the School of Arts & Sciences.
  • Planning and leading monthly school meetings for faculty and staff.
  • Collaborating with the other deans on shared programming, faculty, facilities and other relevant areas.
  • Being available for other duties as assigned by the Provost or the President.

The minimum requirements for this position are: (1) an appropriate terminal degree from a recognized, accredited institution; (2) substantial experience in assessment and program review; (3) relevant experience in higher education administration; (4) a documented record of distinguished university teaching and scholarly and/or creative accomplishments; (5) demonstrated dynamic leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively and strategically to advance undergraduate and graduate education; (6) experience in student recruitment and student retention programming; and (7) grant writing and fund raising.
